1. University of Michigan

Established in 1817 as the first public university in the Northwest Territories, and moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 when Michigan became a state, the University of Michigan has been known as one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States. The University has been ranked in the top 20 universities worldwide, and it has one of the world's largest number of living alumni at 500,000 in 2010, including former U.S. President Gerald Ford, 26 Rhodes Scholars, 7 Nobel Prize winners, 116 Olympic medalists, 15 MacArthur Foundation award winners, 22 Pulitzer Prize winners, and Fields Medal winner Stephen Smale. The university has reported its total enrollment of 43,625 in Fall 2014, with 6,771 instructional staff, and 18,986 non-instructional staff members.
UM owns the University of Michigan Health System and has one of the largest research expenditures of any American University. Its athletic teams, called the Wolverines, are members of the Big Ten Conference and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The athletic program is known for its success in ice hockey and football; the football team plays in Michigan Stadium, also known as "The Big House," one of the largest college football-only stadiums in the world.

2. Korean Student Association - Graduate (KSAG)

Korean Student Association - Graduate (KSAG) at the University of Michigan is a nonprofit organization for Korean graduate students, visiting scholars, research fellows and faculty community on campus, which add up to approximately 1000 people, to generate greater interaction within the community and to increase awareness about the Korean culture outside the community. Established in 1988, KSAG has vigorously made its effort over the years, to accomplish the following three main goals:

a. To foster and maintain a supportive community of Korean and Korean-American graduate students at the University of Michigan

b. To articulate and promote the needs and goals of Korean and Korean-American graduate students at the University of Michigan

c. To cultivate a greater awareness of Korean Culture and promote its interrelation with other cultural groups and organizations in the University society

 

3. KSAG Activities & Events

1) KSAG Website
The KSAG Website plays a major role as an informational hub for the life and education in the region, and is vividly used by more than 2,000 people, including undergraduate/ graduate students, visiting scholars, research fellows and faculties in the University of Michigan, as well as Korean people from the local community.

2) Recruiting information posting and support
KSAG makes an effort to provide as many job opportunities to the undergraduate/graduate students and post-doc fellows in the University of Michigan possible by posting a variety of recruiting information on the KSAG website, or spreading it through the department representatives. In addition, we also support the recruiting events hosted by numerous companies to encourage active participation of members.

3) KSAG Fall Picnic & Welcome Party for New Comers
KSAG holds Fall Picnic and Welcome Party for New Comers every September. The KSAG Staff members will prepare Korean food and various games to enjoy, and provide KSAG members with opportunities to meet new people and get to know each other. Besides, a huge variety of gifts from local community stores will be given out by raffle. This is a fun event that most people don’t want to miss.

4) New Year’s Day Celebration (D’duk-kuk Event)
As a celebration for New Year’s Day, KSAG staff members will provide Korean Rice Cake soup, called D’duk-kuk for everybody in the local community. People can share the hope and joy for the New Year with other people in the community through the event. You can bring your family, friends, and anybody who would like to enjoy Rice Cake soup.

5) Athletic Events
Annually, KSAG organizes various athletic events for the people in the community, such as a golf tournament and bowling and tennis competitions. In addition, KSAG provides support for a sports club in the KSAG, which participates in external sports event representing KSAG.

 

4. Supporting KSAG

Events and activities of KSAG can be maintained by people’s donation and support. Those who would like to support KSAG can donate using one of the following three ways:
